The Artist

Lakshmi Venkatesh

Lakshmi Venkatesh started painting in her childhood inspired by her mother who is an artist and craftsperson. Lakshmi is based in Mumbai where she has spent most of her life. A graduate in chemical engineering she pursued a career in the technical and management field for several years during which time her artistic pursuits took a backseat.

They say that what’s meant to be will always find a way. Her artistic career started in 2018 when she returned to her love of painting and started  water colors and acrylic colours. In 2022, encouraged by the appreciation of her art from friends she decided to go public and participated in an exhibition organised by Kalaa Spandan Art Fair and Maharashtra Art Fair at Nehru Centre in Mumbai. She has since then participated in exhibitions in 2023a and 2024 as well where she exhibited her cyanotypes. Her paintings gathered substantial attention and praise from viewers, translating into successful sales. This positive reception not only validated her artistic prowess but also instilled in her the confidence to embark on a second career in the realm of art.

Face the Day with a Song

Lakshmi has authored a book based on her experience as a chemical engineer from the 1980’s when it was a rarity and describes her progress in the male dominated oil and gas industry. Dance acts as a counterpoint to her life as she vacillates between choices early in her career, and provides an anchor as she grows in her profession. The memoir looks at life through the eyes of a woman and the world she encounters, torn between a career, a much loved hobby and family.

The key events in Indian history like the Emergency, the Bhopal disaster, the Hindu Muslim riots are woven into the narrative from the point of view of the impact it had on a young woman’s life. It uses the format or the “Margam” of a traditional Bharatnatyam stage performance to depict the stages of progression from a young girl, a career woman, a wife and mother, a care giver, and finally woman nearing retirement from a fulfilling career with varied interests to keep her moving forward in life.
